I Have a Radio Show!

By Stella R. Prince, age 14

I think you can tell by the title of this article that I have a radio show. Yes, it’s true– for the past few years, I have been writing scripts and recording numerous episodes of my show, “Get Happy”, which focuses on music from the 1920’s to the 1950’s. Each show is about half an hour long, and I go live every Wednesday from 3:30-4:00 PM.

Being a DJ is quite an adventure, an adventure that never crossed my mind. At first I was incredibly nervous to work the soundboard and use various microphones and computers, but I quickly got used to it, and now I don’t even think about what I’m doing, since I know how to turn on most of the gadgets in the room, for the most part. The way I do it is by downloading all of my songs for the show on iTunes, and then I hook it up to a sound system that will play those songs through a microphone, live on the radio. It’s complicated, but works great. I also have a long script that I prepare every week, which states a little information about each song I play (like what year the song was published, who wrote the songs, etc.). I introduce myself at the very beginning too, and wish everyone a good week at the very end.

I first got into radio when I was 12 years old, at the end of November 2016. My dad and I were taking a short walk around Hudson, New York, where my radio station is based, and we spotted a flyer– it said that WGXC 90.7 was looking for youth programmers to have a half-hour show once a week, and it quickly caught my eye. My dad told me it was probably going to be a very long application process, and very competitive too, but I didn’t care– I was immediately hooked. The two of us walked inside the WGXC 90.7 office building, filled out a form, and we waited– and a few weeks later, I had my show.

So, my radio show “Get Happy” is something very special to me indeed. It’s exciting, fun, challenging, and just quite the adventure. I hope to keep going with it for years to come.

When I listen to your show I hear somebody who is confident, well-prepared and professional. The research you share on the music you play is often fascinating. I am sure that you have a large audience who like the sound of your voice!
