Life from Perspective

By Grace Tang, AK Column Adventures Editor

Life is but a mist of perspective. Size is inevitable, but the lens from which the perspective is made from is rather changeable. Take the microscope, for example, and indulge into a new world of functions and organisms. Take the human eye and observe the beautiful surroundings that the world has to offer. Take the telescope and escape into the unknown. In this sense, the life is just as small or as large as the perspective allows it.

Take a few thousands steps in.

  1. They say that the atom is simply the smallest unit of tangible material on Earth. It is indivisible in nature, and is the building block of every item in this universe. We, the human race, are made up of millions and millions of atoms each.

Take a step back.

  1. They say that the virus is the smallest unit that can make the grand impact that it does. It is not yet living, but it is able to affect every aspect of those who are living. We, the human race, suffer from small sicknesses like the common cold to serious pandemics like Ebola from viruses.

Take a step back.

  1. They say that the biological cell is the smallest living unit on Earth. Within the cell, there are organelles that work together to ensure the survival of the cell. Each organelle has their own roles and duties to ensure this survival, just like how humans are responsible for their own survival on Earth. We, the human race, are made up of millions sand millions of cells. In fact, we are made of nothing but cells.

Take a step back.

  1. They say that there are millions of species on Earth. Amongst these species, there are those that are unbelievably small, and there are those that are fascinatingly large. Think about all the variety – most of which can be observed from the naked human eye. Ants, bees, mice, cats, foxes, humans, whales, sharks. We, the human race, are nowhere close to being the smallest or the largest species, but rather we find a comfortable placement amongst the sizes.

Take a step out.

  1. They say that the sun is the star of our solar system. The largest lump of mass in our solar system. One that is much larger than planet Earth yet it is nothing but a dot in our galaxy.

Take a step out.

  1. They say that the galaxy is grand and captivating. Our sun is amongst millions of millions of other large lumps of mass. We, the human race, are a part of this galaxy yet our significance may only be needed with the magnification of the most powerful microscope.

Take a few thousand steps out.

  1. And there it is. The entire universe. Yet everything in the universe is made up of the ladder from the smallest of the small.

And that is that.

Because after all, life is but a mist of perspective.
