Summer Adventure

By Kyle Swartz, age 14, Pennsylvania

During this somewhat short summer, my family and I went on my favorite vacation I’ve had in my whole life. It was to the West Coast, where I have wanted to go my whole life (and eventually live in Seattle). Our flight was long and tiring, but it was well worth it in the end. We arrived in Washington to be greeted by my family’s long-time friend.

We had many adventurous experiences during this time, my favorite being Crater Lake in Southern Oregon. The third and fourth days were the best in my opinion, because we got to see Crater Lake. The ride getting to our camp site at Crater Lake was very nerve racking due to the large steep cliffs on both sides of the road. The worst part was that when we got to the camp site, we were virtually eaten alive by mosquitoes. We had a great time the following day, however. We went to the visitor station where we learned about the history of Crater Lake. We then took a last minute bus tour around the lake. We got to see and learn a bunch of new things about Crater Lake.

The fourth day of my vacation was the better day out of the two days we were at Crater Lake. We got to actually go down and swim. There was a little cliff I was able to jump off 5 times. The water was freezing, but the clearest that I had ever seen. After that we went on a boat tour to the one island in the lake. Here we went on a hike to the peak of this island. Then we came back down and went swimming for a few more minutes. I even got to swim to the bottom and touch a rock!

This trip was the highlight of my summer and I will never forget it. I hope to go back at least one more time to see it.
