A Trip to Rock Garden of Chandigarh, India

By Srujana Dadi, 4th Grade, Bellevue, WA

The summer of 2010 was exciting because I visited India. Seeing my family members was so much fun but I also got to travel to different places in India.

The Nek Chand Rock Garden of Chandigarh is one of the memorable places I visited. The Rock Garden is in the city of Chandigarh in the state of Punjab, India. Chandigarh is known as a planned city with a very structured layout throughout the city. While traveling to the fabulous Rock Garden, we enjoyed the view of Sukhna Lake. The Nek Chand Rock Garden is a wonderful sculpture garden on 18 acres of land, full of the imagination of one man named Nek Chand.

Wall of Water

This garden is so unique; I mean who would ever think about making a garden out of trash and recycled material? Yes, this garden is full of beautiful sculptures made out of recycled material from demolition sites around the city.

Sculptures Made of Tiles

There are different kinds of creations including dolls and walls made out of materials like unused electric plug points, tile pieces and broken glass pieces.

Refreshing Waterfalls

I enjoyed seeing the dolls made with broken glass pieces the most. I also admired the beautiful waterfalls with a bridge and a big wall as a background. It’s so nice to be there. It makes you wonder how a single person could have such a great imagination and the creativity to build this unique garden?

When I left the garden I just thought – there is so many things one person can do, just like Nek Chand. What can you do?

WOW! What a great model for all of us, to help us think about what we can do with our unused and recycled trash…instead of just filling up a landfill! VERY interesting! Thank you for sharing!
