SHORT HUMOR STORY

THE WEIRD SHADOW

It was a wonderful day indeed! Everything went smoothly and efficiently. The timetable which I had planned for that day had been followed properly. Now it was bed time. I put on my night clothes and went ahead to sleep. My eyes were tired and I really wanted to have a good sleep, a sleep enough to rejuvenate me for the next day’s activities. Little did I know during that night I would make such a fool of myself!

When I got onto my bed, I turned my face towards the window. I could see a shadow on the wall of the opposite building, not properly, but the clarity was enough for me to understand that it wasn’t a normal shadow; it had something very mysterious about it. I tried to think hard what it resembled actually, and then I came to a conclusion that it was in the shape of a human hand. It had five twisty finger-like projections. It wasn’t like a normal hand. It indeed gave chills down my spine but I wasn’t a scared baby. I was sure about the fact that ghosts don’t exist. But that night the shadow was weakening this faith. I was so sleepy but that shadow couldn’t let me sleep. For the first time in my entire life I had been so scared. The shadow was waving due to the force of the wind.

I seriously had to do something about it. No matter what, I strengthened my willpower and stealthily made my way towards the window. When I reached the window, I was happy enough that I had the courage to walk up to the window. But soon I got sad for I realized that I forgot to get the flashlight. The flashlight was in the living room. It was very irritating because I had to go down the hall to get it. This time I was crying out loud from inside though I didn’t let those tears come out of my eyes. I closed my eyes, took a few deep breaths and gathered all my courage then went to the living room and reached the shelf where I had kept my flashlight. I took the flashlight and literally ran towards my room. With slow but steady steps I reached the window. I opened it-this was the toughest part of the whole thing, switched on my flashlight, but no light came out of it! Oh god! The battery of the flashlight was dead and the spare pair was kept in the next room. This time tears rolled down my cheeks, I couldn’t help it.

As there was no other option, I ran to the next room at top speed, got the battery, inserted it into the flashlight and ran towards my room again. I went towards the window, turned on the flashlight…phew! Finally it was working. I kept the flashlight in the direction of the shadow. I laughed out loud till I cried. The shadow was the branch of a tree shaped irregularly in the form of a hand! A stupid misunderstanding and I made a big fool of myself.  All my fear vanished and I was laughing to the core. How could I have been so foolish?– This was the only question on my mind. However I felt sad as I couldn’t get enough sleep during that night. From that night on, I came to a conclusion that shadows can scare you, but before you think if it is something else, do think twice!
