As our November Amazing Kid! of the Month, Gen’s determination and commitment to use technology to make a difference is inspiring. Read more below to find out about Gen, her vision of technology, and goals for improving our future!

Becoming an “IT” Girl

From early on, Gen has been surrounded by the Information Technology (IT) world because her parents are owners of an IT company. However, it wasn’t until Gen saw how technology could have a positive and lasting impact the lives of others that she became interested.

“A Microsoft Partner in Bangladesh shared with my mother her vision of starting a community tech school for young women so they have an opportunity to change their life and the lives of future generations,” Gen explains. From there, she was hooked!

Right away she wanted to be involved in the project so she quickly found out what she would need to study to be able to participate. “Within 5 weeks I was Microsoft certified and a year later Microsoft MCTS certified,” Gen shared. Being a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist or MCTS means that Gen has the ability to implement, build on, troubleshoot, and debug Microsoft technology!

Gen INC, Gen’s Web Channel

Since then Gen has submersed herself into the IT world. She even has her own web channel, Gen INC, where she empowers females to take part in changing the world through technology. Gen says that Gen INC was started for philanthropic reasons. “I think girls with so much talent and so much to give are not aware of the potential they have to change the world.  I hate to think that we could miss this and so I am out to show them what tech is really all about!” Not only does Gen INC. present the latest technology to girls in a fun and easy-to-understand way, discussing topics such as how to be appropriate and safe on the Internet, it also inspires girls to consider technology as a fun and exciting possible future career.

Gen goes on to explain that technology not only has the power to change the individual and give them opportunities, but also allow them to impact the lives of others. In particular, her goal for Gen INC is to help kids in underprivileged communities by changing their lives and lives of future generations! Gen explains that technology can do so much to help the world. “It starts with technology helping government agencies to better structure programs, using web sites and databases that help track who, what, and where specific medical, food and tools need to be delivered.” With the help of this technology, underprivileged kids can then get the education they need! “What a wonderful feeling to know you can help a child get clean drinking water, something we always take for granted, by building a web site that only asks your friends to click to give,” Gen adds.

Teaching Kids Programming

Along with her web channel, Gen also finds the time to take part and help teach kids programming.

Teaching Kids Programming (TKP) was created by Lynn Langit to get kids excited to learn programming in a more simplistic way. Gen decided to adapt the program and use it to help teach girls programming. “Since there is such a low percentage of women in technology I decided that this needed to be targeted at girls as a way of showing them and tech companies the true effect a program like this could have”

“The program is designed to be fun and allow them to experiment, so I get the pleasure of pushing them to try and not worry about the results because you are never wrong.” Gen explains. “We all get excited as a group and we feed off each other’s enthusiasm.”

The most rewarding part for her is having her students come up asking when they will be able to start teaching classes! Her goal is to get more kids involved in these programming classes. “I saw firsthand how the girls could not believe what they could do in a matter of two hours. And they LOVED it.”

Participating in the Imagine Cup

Gen’s time is stretched out between many activities and events. “I have really started to participate in more events that give me an amazing opportunity to meet and speak one-on-one with some of the most incredibly socially responsible and thoughtful people.”

This past April, Gen had the opportunity to go to the Imagine Cup. This is a technology competition put on by Microsoft for high school, college, and university students. Here, Gen was able to interview James Cameron, which she admits was probably one of her most surprising and unexpected interviews. Cameron is famous for writing and directing the movies Titanic and Avatar and is known for his innovative use of technology for his movie’s special effects. “He knew so much about the lack of innovation in America and the issue of girls not taking STEM as a serious path for their future,” Gen says. “I came back with a stronger determination to make Gen INC a platform for change!”

Finding Time for Other Activities

Gen also notes how important it is for her to engage in other activities. She has a variety of other hobbies, one of which is reading. “I think it’s very important to understand the world around us from many perspectives, and to allow the adventures and ideas of others to be shared,” she shares. “A lot of what I have learned I have actually used in the programming class.”

Other interests of hers include acting, music, and sports. At the age of 3 Gen began practicing martial arts. She also plays piano, bass, and drums, and adds that music had such a positive effect on her learning. “The drums actually landed me a part in an upcoming film release this December in Canada!” Gen adds. The movie Gen is referring to is Funkytown, but she has also been in two other films!

Amazing Kids! is delighted to report that Gen has joined the ranks of the Amazing Kids! Online Magazine as a Co-Editor for the Amazing Kids! “SciTech Kids” column.  She will share the position with another amazing tech and science-savvy student, Brad Bradshaw of San Antonio, Texas, who joined Amazing Kids! earlier this year.  Now Gen will be able to bring her amazing reporting and tech knowledge to a broader audience of both girls and boys. Amazing Kids! is excited to bring Gen’s exceptional knowledge and passion for “all things tech” to our ever-expanding readership, young and old alike, which is nearing the 1 million mark.

Goals for Improving the World through Technology

With so many interests and talents, Gen is still keeping her future open. In the short term she hopes to remain teaching programming as well as allowing a wider range of kids to have access to technology. However, Gen has some impressive long term goals too! One possible path is working for the worldwide division of Microsoft where she sees herself launching programs so kids all over the world can take part in technology! “One important goal is to still fulfill the dream of opening a technology training center for girls in Bangladesh,” Gen adds.

As technology continues to grow she hopes that it can start reversing and correcting the mistakes made from misusing our natural and manmade resources. “My bigger wish is that we promote more programs like the Imagine Cup to focus my generation on using technology to ensure the UN does reach its goals of setting us all on a better path for the future of everyone who inhabits the earth.”

With someone who has taken steps to learn and start making a better world for us, Gen has very inspiring advice for how you can follow your dreams, whatever they might be. “If you dream it, you can learn it, experience it, and then make sure you share that with as many of your friends as possible.”

Gen plans on doing just that. “I have seen so much in the last few years, and I am privileged to have been asked to participate in so many events and thankful for all the new friends I have made because of it. I will not waste these gifts but instead I will keep sharing them with my audience and hope they come with me on this journey!”

  1. This is very inspiring to me, especially since I am interested in technology too. I might even pursue it as a career as well. I was also wondering if Genevieve still lived in Quebec, or if she moved somewhere else. I am doing a project on her, because I really liked the story.
