Quotes of the Month:

  • “I think it is important to have something to strive for. By planting a garden or just some seeds in a pot you can make a difference. My cabbage alone fed 275 people. If more kids did the same, we all could be helping to make a long time dream of no hungry people possible.”
  • “Knowing that 12 million kids in the U.S go to bed hungry makes it easier to be thankful for what I have.” – Katie Stangliano, Age 10, Amazing Young Gardener, Anti-Hunger Activist and Winner of the Amazing Kids!’ “Launch My Dream!” T-Shirt Design Contest

Our March 2009 Amazing Kids! of the Month:

When Katie Stangliano of Summerville, South Carolina planted a cabbage seedling in her backyard last year at age 9, little did she know it would grow to an amazing 40 pounds!

Realizing it could feed far more than her own family, she decided to donate it to a soup kitchen at Tricounty Families Ministry. Her cabbage fed nearly 300 people that day and the wonderful experience inspired Katie to do more to help end childhood hunger. She decided to enter the first-ever Amazing Kids!’ “Launch My Dream” T-Shirt Design Contest to get help in launching her dream of no hungry children. And guess what? She won!

According to United Nation’s World Food Program, 25,000 people across the world die every day from hunger and related issues. Among the key causes of hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment. There is a lot that needs to be done to eliminate world hunger and everybody has to be involved.

When ten year old Katie Stangliano of Summerville, South Carolina learned about this, and about hungry children right in her own community, she decided to do her part. “I think it’s important to help stop world hunger,” she notes.

So when a cabbage seedling she planted in her backyard grew to an amazing 40-pound size, she decided to donate it to the Fields to Families program, which brings fresh produce to the needy. Her cabbage was ultimately utilized by Tricounty Families Ministry in North Charleston, South Carolina to feed nearly 300 people.

Katie was further moved to learn that 12 million kids in the U.S go to bed hungry each night, and that so many children today do not eat enough to be healthy. Inspired by her experience with Fields to Families, Katie decided to do more. She decided to help teach other children about how they, too, can make a difference.

“I think it is important to have something to strive for. By planting a garden or just some seeds in a pot you can make a difference. My cabbage alone fed 275 people. If more kids did the same, we all could be helping to make a long time dream of no hungry people possible.” she explains.

To fulfill her dream of a hunger-free world, Katie decided to participate in the first-ever Amazing Kids!’ “Launch My Dream!” T-Shirt Design Contest. The goals of the Launch My Dream! initiative are to help kids who have a passion to accomplish a big dream for their amazing future, by gathering the resources they’ll need to launch their dreams.

As part of the contest, Amazing Kids collaborated with verimeri (verymeri.com), a clothing company and website which helps charities and schools create and sell clothing items to raise money for their cause.

Alyse Rome, the Founder and President of Amazing Kids! explains: “The initiative was born out of what I saw was a great need for comprehensive resources for kids and teens to launch their dreams and get a head start planning for their future. Through a strategic collaborative effort with our partners and supporters, the Launch My Dream! initiative provides hope and inspiration for kids, direction, hands-on assistance and a ‘jump start’ to youth so our children’s potential won’t go to waste.”

Katie’s winning t-shirt design was based on her mission to fight world hunger. The front of the t-shirt states:  “My Dream…No Hungry Children,” and on the back, it says: “It Will Only Take a Seedling.”

Katie says: “I hope my t-shirt design will spread the word that there should and could be no hungry children. I think it’s important to help stop world hunger, and if kids like me decide to grow a vegetable and donate it to their local food bank or soup kitchen, they are helping launch my dream. I hope Amazing Kids! can help launch the dreams of many more kids like me.”

10% of the t-shirt proceeds will be given to Katie in support of launching her dream of “No Hungry Children.” Katie plans to donate her share to hunger causes, including a local Charleston area soup kitchen. The remaining 10% of proceeds will go to Amazing Kids! in support of the Launch My Dream! initiative, to help even more kids like Katie launch their amazing dreams.

Katie’s Dreams for an Amazing Future

“If I could teach kids to grow vegetables, we could make sure no children go to bed hungry. It would only take a packet of seeds, water, soil, and some TLC (“tender loving care”) and any kid could grow vegetables in their backyard.” she says talking of her future plans.

Katie recently learned that her school has set aside a large plot of land on school property, so that the entire school can help Katie plant vegetables to donate to their local food banks as well as help provide healthy vegetables for the students’ school lunches. Through a generous grant from Fields to Families, Katie’s school will receive seeds, volunteer help, and Katie will get the chance to work with a master gardener as her mentor!

She hopes to inspire hundreds of other kids just the way she was inspired by her own swim coach.

“I met Brielle when I was seven. She was my swim coach. When I joined the swim team I couldn’t even swim across the pool but, she stuck with me and supported me and that year, my first year of swim team, I qualified for the Championship meet. Brielle and I became great friends. She is a great role model because she works very hard at all she does, she was Valedictorian, she is a fantastic swim coach and terrific swimmer, and she shows hard work pays off,”  she says about her role model.

So, what has Katie learned from this experience?

“This whole experience taught me to be grateful for what I have and try to give to those in need. Knowing that 12 million kids in the U.S go to bed hungry makes it easier to be thankful for what I have. I took a class trip to Camp Saint Christopher in a South Carolina Barrier Island. They had a no food waste policy. They encouraged us to take only what we would eat. So many kids waste food because they don’t understand that the food could go to kids in need who don’t have any food. I had no idea that donating a cabbage to a soup kitchen would give so many people a meal. At the soup kitchen, a lot of people thanked me for helping to feed them. I realized that that may be their only meal that day…”

We, at Amazing Kids!, are honored to be helping such an amazing young lady launch her dream. By helping support hunger relief organizations working to insure hungry children everywhere have enough food to eat this Winter and beyond, Katie is doing her part to help make a difference in our world.
