A Mother’s Love

By Liza Makarova, 16, Pennsylvania

The little boy in his mother’s lap,
Unaware of what’s around,
Views the beach as a lot of joy.
What else could you expect?

He cannot see the winds of fear
Attempting to get ahold of him.
No matter how hard they blow or
How much sand they throw,
It simply does no good;
The waves of pain and currents of injustice
Give an honest effort, but
The little boy is simply out of reach.

His mother holds him in her arms,
Her soft, white sweater,
His only shelter.
She blocks the world out, so he can grow
And smile and laugh and learn-
Enjoy the beach, the world, for all its good;
And never even know.
