Back When

By Allison Stein, Assistant Editor and Poetry Editor

I used to run—
Invincible—
Across seashell-cluttered shorelines
Until I knew the world would never catch me:
At five years old, I didn’t believe in dead ends.

I used to laugh—
Fearless—
Before my footprints, my memories etched in the sand,
Eroded in the waters of tomorrow:
At five years old, I didn’t believe in time.

I used to dream—
Untouchable—
Of the freedom rushing through whitecaps
Back when nobody told me about the moon tugging at the tides,
Back when I didn’t believe in gravity.
