Deplorable Forest

By Victoria K., age 13, Tennessee

I am a forest
Lost in the darkness
At night my trees glow
But I’m afraid of my darkness
I need windows in my life

The lavender lilies turn from me
With faces smirking disdain
The tender tulips avert me
The sun is much better for them

My only companion
Is a broken wolf
Pensive, swallowing saliva
Chasing cackling leaves
He worries about the seeds sown in the wind
And the shadows creeping up my branches

I shall sing the dingy rings
Of many unfinished songs
As my poor heart groans
Within its heartless self
I need windows in my life
