Dog Days

By Mugisha Cutsimpumu, age 17, Massachusetts

She zooms past her human holding open the door to freedom
Air slaps her nose, so fresh she has to
Let its gloriousness fill up her lungs
She leaps around and around, distracted by her tail
Looking around at the vibrant colors of the flowers
Gray, light gray, dark gray swirl in her eyes
The grass is so ripe she has to lick it again and again in appreciation
With its crisp taste lingering in her mouth
She snuggles into it, cool blades against her back, and closes her eyes
As the sun curls around her in a warm embrace
The wind whistles all around
