Even as a Child

By Sarah Panameno, 15, California

Running through the playground
Wood chips crunch under my feet
He’s not going to catch me
I know I should be quiet
I know shouldn’t giggle
Giggle
“Gotcha!” he shouts
I mutter the forbidden word under my breath
“Stupid.”
Immediately I feel the heat run into my cheeks.
Regret is never a good feeling
Even as a child
“I’m sorry,” I say, nervously biting my nails.
Anticipation and worry
“It’s okay.”
Relief
Even as a child
“Tag, you’re it!” I shout and tap his shoulder.
Thrill and excitement
Even as a child
