Fly Life

By Justin Wells

The little, noisy bug
Flew into our view
In slow scramble circles,
Right under the lights
Just above our feast.
We stopped and observed
as the fuzzy fly
Ran into our cups,
Crashed into our bread
and landed on the food.
Almost easy to see
Hard to kill by hand.
Missing and being annoyed
Dad got a towel.
Tried to hit it.
Missed. Instead, detached
A plate from the table
With a vicious swing.
Thought it was dead
But hidden under napkins,
Wiping hands like a theft.
As we were irritated
The fly flew over
The gate into life.
It had left, relieved
Buzz, Buzz, Buzz.
Another must’ve come
Dinner inside “yes”.
