Growing Up Biking

By Jacqueline Celsky, age 16, Pennsylvania

One of the things we don’t talk about
When we talk about bike riding is how it makes you feel
Learning as a kid doesn’t always come easily
Parents or older siblings holding onto the back of your bike
Promising not to let go
But
They do
Slamming on the brakes to stop from crashing
Flipping off your bike skidding on the ground
The way the wind claims you as its own
How it tickles your legs trying to make you twitch
The feeling of being free
The way you tightly grip the handles
The way you get scared because who knows
Where this trip will take you
One of the things we don’t talk about
When we talk about riding our bikes
Is how they make us feel
