Just Listen

By Julia Weingaertner, age 16, New Jersey

A melody as sweet as spun sugar
A beat as soft as footfalls on a sandy shoal
Instruments singing a tune
As clear as the gurgling water of a brook
We dip our toes and fingers
Into its flowing honey harmonies

The pastel colors of each cheery note
Vibrations of percussion traveling through us
As if an earthquake is rumbling gently beneath our shoes
We hum with the serene strains
Tap along with the halcyon rhythm
And lose ourselves

What messages are hidden in your careful intervals?
What secrets live in your lovely scales?
What is it about the perfect song
That allows us to
Journey
In the music?
