My Favourite Poem

By Carly Breault, age 16, BC Canada

My Favourite Poem

Is the one

That started

It all

Severed the barrier

Between sole words

And meaning

When I garnered my

“poetic license”

It was queer and shabby

An episode of hope

Never played with words

To create something

Profound

Line breaks were few.

Just another page

In my school notebook

And it told me

I had a purpose

To find.

It was strange

And elusive

Filled

With innocence

And wonder

Humble dirt

It didn’t win the local poetry contest,

It never won anything

But Mama liked it

Framed it on the wall

So I could see

Every pass-by

My heart

On a lined-piece of paper
