Once Living, Forever Living

By Andrea Zhang, age 16, New Jersey

It was a small, fragile sapling to start
With thin roots digging into Mother Earth.
Straight through the topsoil and towards her heart.
The sapling held a flame warm as a hearth.

It became a strong and sturdy young tree,
With tough roots embracing what’s underneath.
It grew against all forces, tall and free.
Its long branches shaded all things beneath.

It is now a mature and weakened Oak
With dormant roots resting in the soil.
Its still branches towering like a cloak,
And its aged leaves cascading like gold oil.

The tree that once made this town feel so whole,
Now and forever living in our souls.
