Overthinking

By Abdullah Akbar, 16, Canada

I once encountered a man who did say
Fear itself is merely an illusion,
And then, suddenly, he vanished away—
Nothing but the product of delusion.

It seemed to me nothing more than a dream,
A product of my imagination.
Everything is not always as it seems.
Indeed, a very surreal sensation!

It’s like he’s composed of the things I think;
Whenever my brain wanders, I see him.
If I take a deep breath, stay calm, and blink,
He disappears, and life becomes less grim.

There came a day when it all became clear,
For when I asked his name, he said, “I’m fear.”
