Snowy Day

By Romila Santra, age 14, Kansas

It smothers the roads, the paths, the grass:
A dense blanket for the children at play.
Flakes pile on in a gigantic mass.
People jump onto their eager sleighs.

White darkness engulfs all green;
Blending with the sky;
Colorless, indifferent, glowing with bright sheen;
Muffling the suffocated grass’s cries.

No longer perfect, marred by footprints,
Or shoveled aside, as if a nuisance.
Now acquiring a slightly gray tint,
Completely still, absolutely serene.
