Sometimes Cats

By Brenda Ibarra, 15, California

I have a cat who always lies around,
Always feels mopey, blue, sad, down.
It’s not that hard to infer
It must feel uncomfortable in its bones, flesh, fur.
My cat squirms daily in a box,
I always hear the sound of it scraping the cardboard with a swish, swoosh, swish, swoosh.
Silly cat, it must not know
It isn’t the only one who struggles
With wanting to fit in, feel at home.
It happens to everyone:
Sometimes cats,
Sometimes dogs,
Sometimes, maybe, even frogs.
And, though, to this day I still hear swish, swoosh, swish, swoosh.
I know one day it’ll find comfort in its box.
