Thanks Be

By Alice West, age 17, London

Thanks be for the beautiful world this morning.
Drooping petals drip crisp drops of dew;
Chattering birds converse in sweet tongues
And stretch out their wings through the blue.

Thanks be for the breeze, leaping sunrise with me,
For potential that buzzes on the skin;
I open my mouth, taste new heat, new purpose,
Breath of strength now burning within.

Thanks be for the hours, giving plentiful chance
To hunt for a quench to our thirst;
For weather to alter conditions of day;
And for beast and man inter-immersed.

Thanks be for the sun setting wide overhead,
Eyes closing for tomorrow’s dreams.
Thanks be to the shards glowing light of white face;
Through these toils I see now that she beams.
