The Beginning of Beauty

By Stephanie Guo, Age 15, California

The beginning of beauty
is when you realize

the snow melting
Off the tips of your window box
Will take you to gardening shops. And
some of the seeds stick to your nails,
But the rest
fall from your fingers
And into the soil.
You find yourself
sprinkling the bottled water
From that one luncheon
Into the pot. And

when the little greens
Stick their heads out of the
Brown, you murmur
Hello, but
they will only utter
the faintest of goodbyes
before springing into flowerhood.

The months will scatter
From your palms like bread
For the birds – –
Fleeting, parted,

Rounding
