The City

By Ryan Rastegar, Age 16, California

I wander thro’ each gold-paved street,
Here where no one is free.
And mark every face I meet
Marks of money, marks of “me”.
In every pocket of every Man,
In every child’s spoiled tear,
In every voice: to every hand,
The money-crav’d manacles I hear
How the millionaires cry
Because it’s not enough,
And a billion still won’t satisfy
One in a cuff
But most thro’ midnight I hear
How a youth revs his engine
And of ignorant joy comes a tear
Happiness is not what they imagine
