The Gnarled Gait

By Victoria Krylova, Nonfiction Editor

Smear of wrinkles, tattered hair,
A long life mapped on his forehead,
An old man sways over a cane,
Racked with ill health.

Haggard expression,
Portrait of banality,
Ancient gemstone locked behind old age.

Impulses of joy flash in his mind,
Remembrances of eloquence,
Afterthoughts of youth and strength,
Of deer skipping across green meadows,
Of snow carpeted on the rooftops,
Of dew trickling beyond the seas,
Of children laughing in the sun.
