The Nighttime Normal

By Merlot Tunnell, age 13, California

I’m from where fluff and stuff bring sleep and dreams
Where a cracked window breathes in crisp night air
Where comfort rules over bodily needs
And the face of the clock forecasts emotions

I’m from where loving eyes watch over
Where a brother’s gift shines stars on my sky
Where a traveling companion can sleep soundly in my arms
And the stage of a dream inclines to reality

I’m from where one leg in and one leg out always do the trick
Where snores thunder to rain’s gentle song
Where resting restores rigorous lives
And last night’s stories welcome the new day
