The Old Elm

By Sonya Dabbs, age 7, California

The old elm stands in its glorious pose;
In its quivering leaves the wind gently blows.
I sit underneath its sheltering shade,
And I think of the seed from which it was made.
And I think of its years and of all that it’s seen,
Its branches, too—alive, strong, and green.
The birds and the people admire its grace,
And it lasts in our memories with its vibrant embrace.
