The Spoon

By Katherine Wong, age 15, California

My skin
Gleaming silver and marked with fingerprints
I am strong

But I am also used
Hard grips on my tail
Scooping out of others
Supporting beams of mechanisms that
Hold up other people
But doesn´t hold me up

Every day I dip once more
Into the silky soup of others

My arms
Slanted with exponential slopes
Of stainless steel

I carry their weight
Their smell
Their taste
The chunky onions of flavor
That taint my sense of judgement
Their insides are my insides

The rocks that load my shoulders
Until my back grows crooked
Arthritis lacing through my bones

I will forever carry their burden
