To Water a Plant

By Peter Choi, age 17, Delaware

Experienced youth
Waters a dandelion in passing fall.
The earth dries, and Noxontown Pond traps the koi below
As leaves watch above him, pretending
They won’t burn in the cold any sooner.

He soaks the ground with warm water,
Thawing the bitterness of a day’s lack.

It will die soon,
He knows.
The days are colder, and the sun, more stingy.

Still, he walks to the bower,
Powerful in his muted coat and humble scarf
To prolong the life of his youth and flower.
