Trudging

By Sonia Birla, age 12, North Carolina

The brown grass crinkled at my feet;
The cool wind blew through my hair.
My neck felt cold;
I pulled my scarf close.
Raindrops fell into my eyes;
I squeezed them shut.
The sun wouldn’t shine;
The sky wasn’t blue.
I kept trudging up the hill,
Looking for you.
But every step
Made me feel like you were farther away.
