Waking Up

By Juliana Escobar, Age 17, Colombia

What do you ever get up for?
For the dreams, for the ambition
But no one wants to hear about it.
For truth, to imagine, to see
the moon that swings bare
But no one wants to hear about it.
How difficult it has become in
the solemn new world to
find something to get up for.
Love is an exaggeration, moral law an invention.
The hopeful bodies become broken bottles.
Staying alive is the sole aim in life.
The romantics? The sympathizers?
They’ve been cover with masks of composure.
The last hour of light dies so quickly,
and I ask weakly
is it much too late
to find the ultimate trade
worth getting up for?
