What Little Girls Grow Up to Be

By Rachna Shah, age 16, Illinois

Sweaty palms entangle as the day spins away;
Sunshine gleams upon moisturized grass, luscious.
Cherry blossom petals collect upon the pavement.
Dandelion seeds blown into the air; make a wish―

One-by-one, the yellow petals fall onto cascades;
A tranquil stream’s tone causes ripples, leads to the ocean.
Rushing waves roar, petals swallowed in the stomach;
They float upon the surface, splashed onto shore.

Children with their sand-stained palms, dirt stuck
Under the balmy light; yellow petals collapse, exhausted.
Little girls place them on their toys.
What will they grow up to be?
