When I Blink

By Talia Botelho, age 16, Rhode Island

The night starts slowly at first
But when I blink
The sun is gone
The sky is the color of black velvet
And the stars are winking at me like an old friend
Outside it is quiet and still
So quiet I can hear the music of the night
Crickets and frogs sing their songs
And the moon is a piece of glass in the sky
Morning starts slowly at first also
The sky goes from black to a lavender
And then I blink
And morning is here again
The sun smiles at me from the horizon
And it’s as if a child painted the sunset, messy colors of pink and red and orange
The morning dew tickles my feet
I crane my head to the sky
And smile
