With My Midnight Heart

By Niti Majethia, Age 15, India

Every night I see a million kites
breathing in the darkness.
Consuming the broken hearted
with their nurtured smiles.
As they dream on to be planets,
and wander in the sky.
Every night,
the moon creates a potion
and secretes it into the darkness,
a poem,
a thought,
a word,
a kiss,
because the world
has been consumed
by these poems every night.
Because our hearts
are consumed,
by things inevitable,
every night.
Because we’re all poets
with the collision of eyes
and flapping wings with our eyelashes
painting our skins
and breaking our bones
and coiling our love.

Happy national poetry month!
