A Winter Tale

By Daniela Garcia, age 11, San Pablo, California

It was a cold, windy winter morning. My friend Wendy and I were sitting on my front porch, we were playing the game checkers. She had beat me 4 games in a row and I had beat her 5. I could tell that Wendy was freaking out because she thought I was going to beat her again, but she beat me so today’s game was a draw.
Then Wendy asked me, “Hey now that we finished our board game what, should we do?”
“You know I hadn’t really thought about that, what do you think we should do?”
“I don’t know, but we need something to occupy us for the rest of the winter.”
“Well, there’s a party tonight. You wanna go?”
“I am not much of a party girl. I don’t know.”
“Come on, you can talk to our friends anyway.”
“You mean YOUR friends, nobody likes me anyway.”
“Is that a yes or a no?”
“Are we going or not?”
“I wish I could, but I have an urgent dentist appointment…yeah, very urgent dentist appointment….um…”
“But your teeth are ultra-strong and crazy white.”
“Oh look at the time. Sorry, got to go.”
Inside, I felt like Wendy was trying to avoid me. So I decided to go to her house and see if she was there. Just as I suspected, she was at her house. I knocked on her door and Wendy’s mom answered the door. Then she said,“Hi Dani! What brought you here?”
“My mom…I guess.”
“I..I was kind of kidding.”
“I was kind of kidding too. So, is Wendy here?”
“Of course. Why wouldn’t she be here?”
“She kind of told me she was going to an urgent dentist appointment.”
“Does Wendy like to go to parties?”
“Of course. Actually she told me she was going to a party tonight with her cousin.”
“Her cousin.”
“Yes, she told me that some girl told Wendy that they were cousins.”
“Ok, well actually I have to go now.”
“Ok, it was nice seeing you.”

At first I was mad like a gorilla because Wendy had lied to me, but then I began to wonder, who her cousin was and why she had hid it from me. Then I began to remember that Wendy told me that all her cousins had moved away, that is when I began to get other thoughts.

The next day I found Wendy sitting in a bench alone at school so I asked her, “Why didn’t you tell me you found one of your cousins?”
“Because she isn’t my cousin.”
“Then who is she?”
“She is the new girl at school and the new bully.”
“Let me guess, she is trying to bully you, right?”
“Yes, but I don’t know what to do.”
“ You could try telling the police.”
“She told me that if I told anyone she would hurt me.”
“Then let’s try to take her down the old fashioned way, by hand.”
“I guess we have to.”
So the next day Wendy told me who the girl was, and as soon as I saw her, I went to talk to her. As soon as I told her to stop bullying Wendy, she took my arm and twisted it very hard. My screams alerted the teachers who brought me into the nurse’s station. I tried looking for Wendy but there was no sign of her.
The next day after I had my arm x-rayed and checked at the hospital, I went to look for Wendy at school. When I finally found her, she was with the bully. I was really scared of what would happen next. That day the bully was wearing blue pants and a baby blue t-shirt. Her hair color was dirt brown and her eye color was blue. Her eyes seemed to be saying “I am going to get you”.
When the bully started to grab Wendy’s hand, I went over there and before she could twist Wendy’s hand, I grabbed Wendy and went to the principal’s office. The bully tried to chase us, but we were too fast for her. When we told the principal everything, he immediately called all our parents. We all had a long discussion, ending in the bully’s parents agreeing to take her to counseling. She also apologized to both Wendy and me.
Afterwards Wendy said, “What a week!”
“I know. Right?”
“This may sound kind of funny, but what do you want to do?”
“Last time you asked me that you got bullied and I got a twisted arm,” I said, finally being able to laugh about it.
“Yep, we won’t be doing that again,” Wendy said with a laugh as she hugged me.

So that is how Wendy and I spent a week of winter. What we actually did after that was just go home and watch tv.
