Joan of Arc: An Amazing Kid from History

By Jordan Brunk, Amazing Kid from History Editor and Contributing Writer

Joan of Arc is an amazing kid from history. She was born around the year of 1412 in France. As a child, she never learned how to read or write. Instead, her mother told her about Catholicism and the Church. Joan was very intrigued and became a devout Catholic, following its principles and trying to live her life to the fullest. Even though Joan and her family were forced to flee where they lived because their homes could have been invaded, she decided to trust God and His plan for her life. She shows us to do what we know is right even if we are prosecuted in the process.

When she was just 13 years old, Joan heard voices. She believed that the gift of these voices was from God and that they were telling her to help out France and to try and make Charles the king. Even though Joan was frowned upon, she decided to follow the instructions from the voices. She was rejected to help out the French in the war; however, some people, including Charles, believed her. Charles eventually allowed Joan to fight in the war.

Joan was very devoted to what she was called to do. She even dressed as a man and cut her hair drastically. As a major leader in the war, she helped cause the defeat of the Anglo-Burgundians, which was a very hard task to accomplish. News of Joan and her amazing defeat spread like wildfire around the people, and she grew to be quite famous at such a young age. Later on, Joan fell off her horse and was taken by the Anglo-Burgundians, who wanted to kill her because she helped defeat them.

They kept her prisoner for a year and created a trial against her, saying all of the rules she had supposedly broken. After so long in prison, Joan finally signed a paper saying that the voices hadn’t helped her in the war even though she believed that they had. After signing this, Joan was almost released; however, she dressed up as a man again, so the Anglo-Burgundians decided she had to die. On May 30, Joan was killed, yet she only grew more famous after her death. Eventually, Joan was seen as innocent, and many people still celebrate her bravery and accomplishments to this day.

Joan shows us to always stand up for what we believe in, no matter the consequences. Her bravery shows us to make it through the difficult parts in life because we are strong enough to do it. She also tells us to stand up for our faith because it is what matters most in life. From looking at what Joan spent her life doing, we should do the things that we feel are the truest and are positive in life. She also shows us to live life to the fullest.

Without Joan of Arc, the French would have had a lot of trouble in the war against the Anglo-Burgundians. Joan believed in herself and what was right and true in mind, so we can look up to her and follow her lead. In this way, Joan of Arc truly is an amazing kid from history.
