Laura Ingalls Wilder: An Amazing Kid from History

By Jordan Brunk, Amazing Kid from History Editor and Contributing Writer

Laura Ingalls Wilder is an amazing kid from history. She was born on February 7, 1867, in Wisconsin. As a child, Laura and her sisters and parents moved around a lot because of farming and crops. They went to Minnesota, South Dakota, and Walnut Grove, where they stayed for good. Laura shows us that we can accomplish our dreams no matter how old we are.

Laura grew up with her family members as pioneers, or people who are among the first to settle into new areas. She lived many great adventures and loved her life and the country outdoors even though some things did not go as planned. As she grew older, she decided that she wanted to help her family with money, as her family was quite large. Also, her old sister, Mary, was blind, so she had to attend a special school in order to learn better.

Laura studied and studied, learning about teaching from her own family and community experiences and from those around her. At just 15 years of age, she took a very important test and passed it. This meant that she was now registered to be a teacher. Laura took a job at a small school several miles from her home. This was when she met her husband, Almanzo, and eventually they got married.

After teaching for several years and then settling down to be a stay-at-home mother for her children and to write about her life, she passed away after her husband on February 10, 1957. Laura shows us that it takes dedicated, hard work to get what we want. Her relentless efforts of studying to be a teacher paid off when she passed the test and became certified. At such a young age, she shows us that we can accomplish anything at any age in our lives if we work diligently.

She also shows us that we should always do what we believe in, no matter what other people say. Additionally, she tells us to believe in ourselves. Laura experienced many hardships in her life, yet she never gave up and continued to do what she thought was right. She shows us to stay strong and do what we want to do while studying hard. In this way, Laura Ingalls Wilder truly is an amazing kid from history.
