Amazing Kids! Spotlight Interview with Journey Carter

By Catherine Cheng

Journey Carter has started a company called The Journey Collection by Jameelah that is dedicated to making beautiful bows and uses them to give back to the community. Amazing Kids! talked with Journey about her collection and her goals for the future!

AK: What inspired you to create The Journey Collection?

JC: I was inspired to create The Journey Collection by Jameelah because there was a time when I didn’t feel confident in how I looked, so I began making bows for myself and for other girls who felt the same way. I wanted my bows to make them feel pretty because that’s what they did for me.

AK: How do you feel pretty and maintain your self-esteem on a daily basis?

JC: My Mom always tells me I’m pretty, and I look at myself and say that even if people may be jealous of how you look, act or feel, there’s no reason to be embarrassed about who you are. So I know I’m pretty, and it’s more than just about your looks. It’s about your confidence. I remind myself of that on a daily basis and that’s how I maintain my self-esteem.

AK: Why do you think being true to yourself is so important?

JC: I think being true to yourself is important because it makes you more confident in who you are than when you’re unsure, lost, or trying to be someone else. When you’re confident in you, it makes you powerful and confident in all other things.

AK: Please tell us a little more about The Journey Collection. What are the company’s goals? How are the bows made? How does The Journey Collection reach out to the community?

JC: I want the company to grow so big, to the point that everyone everywhere knows about it. Usually when people start businesses they want to become famous or rich, but I don’t want any of that. I mean if it happens, that’s cool too (LOL)! When The Journey Collection by Jameelah becomes extremely successful, I want to give half of the money we make to charity and to my Uncle Carey so that he can renovate his homeless shelter, and have enough money to give food and toys to people in the community during his Thanksgiving and Christmas drives.

When making our bows, we go to different stores and get a selection of bands, and a lot of different bows that are multicolored or solid colored.  Then we go to another store to purchase the Swarovski crystals that you’ll find on all of our bows. We then hot glue the crystals onto the bows and they come out as pretty as can be.

We reach out to the community through our social media sites on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. I’m also trying to sell the bows at my school, hair salons and churches. I also want to visit hospitals and give my bows to little girls who are suffering from cancer.

AK: Did you encounter any challenges when you started The Journey Collection? How did you overcome them?

JC: At first I thought it wouldn’t work because I thought adults would say, “Oh she’s a little girl, she doesn’t know what she’s doing!” but my family helped me get the Journey Collection out there. I’m happy I didn’t let what other people may have thought hold me back.

AK: What are your goals for the future – both personal and for The Journey Collection?

JC: My personal goal is to be more confident in myself and to remember that I’m strong, powerful and able to be anything I want to be. I want The Journey Collection by Jameelah to expand beyond bows. I want the collection to have its own rings, bracelets, handbags and more. I’d like The Journey Collection by Jameelah to be in existence for many generations.

AK: You have very nice videos on your YouTube channel! Could you tell us a little bit about your experience making videos and uploading them to YouTube?

JC: For now, I work with someone on the Journey Collection team who helps me film and post my videos. This summer I will be filming and posting my own videos. I will have a few playlists including motivational videos and a vlog playlist.

AK: Besides running The Journey Collection, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

JC: In my free time, I love to ride my Pocket Mod Scooter, play with my cousins, go shopping, and hang out with my parents and my family.

AK: What advice would you give to our readers about following their dreams?

JC: Always follow your dreams because if you don’t follow your own dreams you’ll follow someone else’s. Following other people’s dreams will make you drift off and get lost from what you’re supposed to do. Believing in God will lead you on the right path, and believing in yourself with take you exactly where you belong.

AK: Is there anything else you would like to add?

My cousin Jameelah helps me put the bows together and my good friend Maureen helps me with my YouTube videos and my Instagram page.  The collection wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for them, and I can’t thank my lovely Mommy enough. She’s the one who helped make everything happen. I love you so much Mommy!! I thank her for everything she helps me with. She is really the best!!!
