Interesting Things to Know about the Brain

By Ryan Traynor, Contributing Writer

We studied the brain in Human Biology this year and it was interesting. However, I wanted to find out more than what the brain was made of and how the neurons work. I set out to find the most interesting facts about the brain that I could find. Enjoy!

  1. The weight of the human brain is around 3 pounds.
  2. There are no pain receptors in the brain so the brain can’t feel any pain.
  3. The human brain is 60% fat.
  4. Your brain does not grow any more after the age of 18.
  5. The human brain is over 3 times as big as the brain of other mammals that are the same body size.
  6. If stretched out, the cerebral cortex would be 2.5 square feet.
  7. The right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body and the left side of the brain interacts with the right side of the body. Scientists still don’t know why this occurs.
  8. The cerebrospinal fluid that suspends the brain acts to protect it as a cushion and to be a barrier to infections.
  9. We use every part of the brain and each part has a function.
  10. The brain uses 20% of the total oxygen in the body and 20% of the blood.
  11. No oxygen to the brain for 5 – 10 minutes will result in permanent brain damage in most situations.
  12. A study of a million students in New York showed that students who ate lunches that did not include artificial favors, preservatives, and dyes did 14% better on intelligence tests than students who ate lunches with these additives.
  13. The brain can distinguish between you tickling yourself and someone else tickling you. That is why you can’t get tickled by your own fingers.
  14. A small area in the brain called the amygdala allows us to determine if someone is in a good mood, is sad or angry, just by reading the face.
  15. Men and women’s brains react differently to pain.
  16. Repetitive stress can impair your memory.
  17. Alcohol interferes with brain processes and weakens connections between neurons.
  18. When we blink, our brain keeps the image there so that we don’t see dark areas.
  19. A new connection is made in the brain each time you recall a memory or have a new thought.
  20. Everyone dreams, just some people remember them and some don’t.
  21. Brain waves are more active while you are dreaming than when you are awake.
  22. Laughing works with five areas of the brain.
  23. Music lessons boost brain organization and ability in both children and adults.
  24. The brain has about 70,000 thoughts a day.

So think about these facts and then realize that you are using your brain to do it. It’s an organ that has much mystery around it and yet has so much information out there to learn. Begin your research today.
