The Greatest Mysteries of History

By Ryan Traynor, Assistant Editor

We have made many discoveries over the centuries that show how things were created and how events happened. However, some of the greatest mysteries of all time are still not solved. They are the “Mysteries of History”. Below are some of the greatest mysteries that have not yet been solved.

1.  Plato’s writings discuss Atlantis as a naval power that conquered much of Europe and Africa. After failing to invade Athens, the city sank into the ocean in a single day. The Lost City of Atlantis is a great mystery. Atlantis is believed to have submerged after an earthquake or tsunami. It was estimated to have the most advanced civilization of all time. It was supposed to be filled with beautiful people, a large temple and walls and canals that ran in circles. This underwater island is believed to be in South America, off the Greek Islands, or near Antarctica. There have been many attempted expeditions to find the Lost City of Atlantis, but none have been successful.

2. Stonehenge is one of the greatest mysteries of history. On the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, there stand numerous carved bluestones that each weigh six tons and are stacked on top of each other. The stones are dated back to 2500 – 3000 BC. Their purpose and creation remain a mystery. Some believe they are the result of a glacial movement, others believe it predicts an alien invasion. Most believe it is a burial ground. Cremated remains have been found around the site. No explanation has been adopted yet.

3. The Loch Ness Monster is a fairly large monster seen, photographed as recently as 2007, and even videotaped in the large, deep freshwater lock in the Scottish highlands. Its nickname is “Nessie”. Even though it has been identified by sonar equipment, all the evidence is not clear enough to verify its existence.

4. The disappearance of Amelia Earhart during an around the world flight in 1937 caused one of the biggest mysteries of our time. Ms. Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island after giving her last radio transmission. Some think Amelia Earhart ran out of fuel and crashed at sea. Some believe she was captured by Japanese forces because they suspected her of being a spy for the CIA. Others believe she returned to the United States and the government gave her a new identify. We still don’t know the answer as no remnants of her plane have ever been found.

5. Sasquatch is a large hairy monster sighted in the American Northwest. Even after numerous sightings, experts assert that the detections are a combination of folklore and hoaxes. Some believe the Sasquatch is a supersize ape that is a living remnant from the time of the dinosaurs.

6. The Bermuda Triangle is the name given to the area where mysterious disappearances of military planes have occurred. Off the coast of South Florida in December, 1945, radio contact was lost with a group of military planes carrying 14 men. Thirteen more servicemen also vanished when they were sent to search for the missing planes. The area is anchored by Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico and has been linked with other mysterious disappearances. Two passenger planes in 1948 and 1949 disappeared in the area with no explanations or wreckage found. Additional disappearances including boats, ships and planes are listed in books and documentaries. Theories include aliens, bad weather, variations in electromagnetic activity, and methane gas bubbles. The Bermuda Triangle mystery has still not been solved.

Even with great advancements in all scientific fields, there are still many mysteries of history that remain unsolved. Perhaps they’ll remain a mystery forever. Maybe someone reading this article will take an interest in the research and be the great adventurer that solves one of the world’s greatest mysteries. Are you up for the challenge?
